Rancho Murieta South is where the community started, the original gated village south of Highway 16, laid out in the 1970s. It is the smaller and denser of the two sides: settled streets, filled-in landscaping, and the Rancho Murieta Country Club at its center with two eighteen-hole courses. The equestrian center and the community's small airport sit on this side too. Life here orbits the club and the golf. Homes range from fairway-frontage lots to smaller properties off the loops, and mature oaks and irrigated greenery keep the place green through a dry summer. The club, tennis, and pickleball give people reasons to stay inside the gates, but everyday errands mean leaving them, since the nearest full shopping and hospital sit a real drive west toward Rancho Cordova and Folsom. That distance is the tradeoff. This is rural southeastern Sacramento County, about half an hour from big-box stores and emergency rooms, on grassy terrain that carries real wildfire and limited-access worry in fire season. The gates and HOA rules mean the polish comes with oversight. But if you want to step out to a tee box or a horse stall and let the city stay twenty-eight miles west, South is the established heart of Rancho Murieta.
