More than 100 houses on Rockmont Circle in North Natomas decorate for Halloween, and the neighbors told ABC10 on Oct. 20 that about 20,000 people walked the loop last year. They expect more this time. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, with no school the next morning.

That one street now rivals the Fabulous Forties in East Sacramento, the region's oldest Halloween crowd. Between them sit quieter blocks in Curtis Park and Land Park, a light show in Rocklin, and a few Roseville streets where people drive in from other ZIP codes. This guide sorts them by the age of the kid holding the bucket, and adds what Houseberry's neighborhood scores say about each place the other 364 nights of the year.

Our short answer: take a toddler to Curtis Park before dark, take a ten-year-old to Rockmont Circle at 5:30, and save the Fab 40s for kids who can handle a crowd.

The two big nights: Rockmont and the Fab 40s

Rockmont Circle, North Natomas

Rockmont Circle is a loop of two-story early-2000s homes north of Club Center Drive and west of Northborough Drive, near Heron School. The tradition started about 20 years ago as a decorating rivalry between two neighbors, resident John Germany told ABC10, and spread house to house until the whole loop joined in.

The street closes to cars on Halloween, and Sacramento police said they will add officers in the area and other busy neighborhoods that night. Residents have a clear timing tip, reported by KCRA last year. Families with young kids should arrive around 5:30 p.m. It gets packed after 7, and many porch lights go off by 9.

The sidewalks are wide and the ground is flat, which matters if you are pushing a stroller. Natomas Park ranks 5th of 185 overall on Houseberry's Sacramento rankings, with 3.6 out of 5, and its safety score of 4.4 is 1.7 points higher than East Sacramento's. That gap is the biggest reason we put Rockmont first for school-age kids.

The trade-off is scale. Twenty thousand visitors on one loop is a festival, not a neighborhood walk. Park several blocks out, plan a meeting spot, and leave by 8 if your kids are small.

The Fab 40s, East Sacramento

The Fabulous Forties run from roughly 40th to 49th streets between J Street and Folsom Boulevard, KCRA reported during last year's coverage. Big early-1900s houses, deep porches and sycamores overhead, plus Ronald Reagan's governor-era home at 1341 45th Street.

CBS Sacramento found streets full by 7 p.m. in 2022, with traffic near a standstill and one homeowner's 800 pieces of candy gone in 90 minutes. Parking fills by about 4:30. On r/Sacramento, people complain every year about how crazy it gets, and at least one parent skipped it with a five-year-old.

East Sacramento scores 4.5 out of 5 on amenities in Houseberry's data, tied for the highest of any neighborhood in this guide, and 2.7 on safety. For a calmer version, go earlier. Halloween on J Street runs noon to 5 p.m., when the neighborhood's shops hand out candy in daylight, according to Sactown Supermom's 2026 events list.

Chart comparing Houseberry safety and amenities scores for Sacramento trick-or-treat neighborhoods including Natomas Park and East Sacramento
Natomas Park, home to Rockmont Circle, scores 4.4 on safety. The three classic central-city picks average 2.5 on safety and 4.4 on amenities.

Curtis Park and Land Park: the toddler picks

Curtis Park is the one we would choose for a three-year-old. The streets radiate off the park itself, the bungalows sit close to the sidewalk, and the decorating leans pumpkins over gore. Sacramento Life and Living's 2026 guide calls it "the right call for younger kids." The park itself works as a staging area, a place to put on costumes and come back to when someone melts down.

Curtis Park scores 4.3 on amenities and 3.5 on schools, the best school score of the central-city trio, and 2.2 on safety in Houseberry's data.

Land Park is wider and quieter. The blocks north of William Land Park toward Freeport Boulevard draw a steady crowd without the Fab 40s crush, and the sidewalks are generous. Land Park scores 4.5 on amenities and 2.5 on safety. A week early, on Friday, Oct. 23, Fairytale Town at 3901 Land Park Drive holds its 40th Safe and Super Halloween.

Beyond the city: Rocklin, Roseville and the suburbs

Rocklin's Jackson Court

Ask people in Placer County where to go and Jackson Court comes up first. It is a cul-de-sac off Jackson Drive near Blue Oaks Boulevard, where homeowner Keegan George runs a light show of more than 5,000 lights synchronized to music, with fire effects on weekends. In 2024 it ran nightly from 7 to 10 p.m. from mid-October through Halloween, KCRA reported. This year's hours were not posted when we checked, so look at the show's Instagram before you drive.

Treat it as a destination stop. One court is not 40 doors. Plan to watch a show, then walk the surrounding streets of Sunset West, which scores 3.5 on safety and 4.1 on schools in Houseberry's data. Rocklin's top-scored neighborhood, Whitney Ranch, sits at 4.5 on safety, among the highest in the region.

One correction you will see online. Castle Rock Way, the haunted-house street TV crews have called a Rocklin spot, is in West Roseville, ZIP 95747.

Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove and Davis

Roseville's busiest block is Anacapa Drive in Highland Reserve, which scores 4.3 on safety and 4.0 on amenities in Houseberry's data. A Roseville agent's 2026 list also names West Park, Fiddyment Farm and Johnson Ranch. Residents on r/Roseville point to Old Roseville near Roseville High for the haunted houses, pirate ships and fog machines.

The suburbs lean on events, and several fall before Halloween this year:

Questions parents ask

What time should we start? Around 5 to 5:30 p.m. for little kids. Sunset is about 6:07, the busiest stretch is 6:30 to 8, and most houses are dark by 9.

Is it fine to drive to another neighborhood? Yes, and thousands do. Park a few blocks away, never in a driveway, and walk in. The residents of Rockmont and the Fab 40s ask one thing: remember people live there.

Where is quieter for a toddler? Curtis Park, Land Park, or the Pocket and Greenhaven, where Sacramento Life and Living notes there is less foot traffic. Daytime shop events like J Street are easier still.

Is there a curfew? Sacramento's curfew for anyone under 18 is 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The one we would pick

For most families with kids under seven, Curtis Park at 5 p.m. is the night. Flat blocks, a park in the middle, and houses close enough that a tired kid gets ten doors before the complaints start. For older kids who want the spectacle, Rockmont Circle is the street everyone will be talking about Monday.

If one of these blocks makes you wonder what living there is like in March, every neighborhood above is scored side by side on Houseberry's Sacramento rankings, and you can find your own street on the Houseberry map.

About the Houseberry Research Team

The Houseberry Research Team is Houseberry's reporting team: Bay Area real estate analysts, data specialists and longtime local market watchers. Every day we check the public record: building permits, city council and planning agendas, county recorder filings, state housing bills, police incident data and school results. Then we tie each story to what it means for specific neighborhoods, using Houseberry's own neighborhood data on prices, appreciation, safety, schools and amenities.
