Sacramento International Airport is the region's primary commercial gateway, spread across the flat land northwest of the city near Metro Air Park and the I-5 corridor. It is infrastructure at metro scale, not a neighborhood: terminals, runways, cargo and rental-car facilities, parking, and the open buffer land a major airport requires. Nobody lives inside the boundary. Its role is as the region's aviation gateway and a significant employment center, and its reach extends far beyond its fences. For the wider metro, and for the North Natomas neighborhoods to the south, the airport is a major asset. It is the area's connection to the rest of the country, a large source of jobs, and the reason the Natomas freeway network is laid out the way it is. As a place to live it is strictly an airport, offering nothing residential. Its value is to the entire region as critical transportation infrastructure rather than to any single neighborhood, and the housing decisions it shapes are made in the villages nearby, not on the airfield itself.
