Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review

Rio Linda reads as country the moment the sidewalks give out. This unincorporated pocket north of Sacramento was carved from old Rancho del Paso and sold as ten-acre poultry farms a century ago. Large lots, horse fencing, and gravel frontages line Rio Linda Boulevard, Elkhorn Boulevard, and M Street. Dry Creek runs through it, and most parcels sit on septic rather than city sewer. The equestrian tradition is no marketing pose. Boarding stables and roadside pasture are part of daily life. Depot Park, built around the restored Sacramento Northern rail depot, is the closest thing to a town center, hosting the farmers market and Country Faire. What you do not get is walkable retail or many parks, so errands and the freeway mean driving. Twin Rivers schools, including Rio Linda High, serve the area. The tradeoffs are real. Dry Creek has a history of jumping its banks, flooding homes in 1997 and 2017, and upkeep swings block to block from tidy ranches to weathered, in-progress lots. Jets bound for Sacramento International pass overhead. But for the price of an acre and a barn, Rio Linda offers room to keep a horse, a truck, and a garden the tract suburbs to the south cannot.
