Mather is defined by its runways. This is the former Mather Air Force Base, closed in 1993, and most of the ground southeast of Sacramento is still working land: Sacramento Mather Airport handling cargo flights and the low office and warehouse blocks of the Mather Field business park along Mather Field Road. It reads more as an employment and airfield district than a place to live, with US-50 and the Zinfandel interchange feeding it from the north. What keeps Mather from being purely industrial is its open space. Mather Regional Park runs to roughly 1,600 acres and holds Mather Lake, stocked seasonally with bass and trout, plus vernal pools and wetlands that pull in migrating birds. The 18-hole Mather Golf Course sits inside the same green belt. For a district built around an airfield, the recreation is the reason anyone lingers here on a weekend. The tradeoffs are the ones you would expect from old base land: aircraft and cargo operations overhead, a streetscape built for trucks and commuters, and long stretches with no neighborhood texture. Housing is thin and mostly pushed to the edges near Independence at Mather. Come for the lake, the links, and the grasslands. The rest of Mather is a place that works for a living.
