La Colina is a straightforward south San Jose tract that punches a little above its weight because of its park. La Colina Park anchors the middle of the neighborhood with a playground, picnic areas, a community garden and a walking loop, which gives the streets around it a genuine center that a lot of tracts this size never get. Beyond the park, this is a familiar suburban grid of quiet streets and established homes. La Colina housing is settled single-family stock, most of it from the late 1960s and 1970s, on flat, quiet blocks that have been lived in for decades. The Santa Teresa hills rise to the south and west, and Oak Grove and Silver Leaf are the neighborhoods next door. The bigger outdoors starts a short drive away. Santa Teresa County Park covers the hills that form the skyline to the south, and the paved Coyote Creek Trail, a drive to the east, runs flat along the water toward Morgan Hill. Food nearby tends to be low-key and local rather than a dining destination. Bill's Cafe on Cottle Road is the spot for a big weekend breakfast, Sonny's Cafe near the Blossom Hill Caltrain station serves Vietnamese plates, and Erik's DeliCafe close by makes a quick sandwich lunch. Westfield Oakridge, a short drive northwest, covers department stores and specialty shops for the bigger trips. Getting around is easier than in much of the south valley. Light rail boards at the Cottle and Santa Teresa stations on VTA's line north toward downtown, Caltrain stops at Blossom Hill, and Highway 85 and US-101 sit close by. Past the park, though, nearly every errand is a drive, and Blossom Hill Road carries a steady stream of cars getting there. The tradeoffs are the usual south-valley ones: those arterials carry real traffic on the edges, and this is car-first territory where a walk to anything but the park is unlikely. For a modestly priced neighborhood with a real green heart, a community garden and easy shopping, La Colina does the job without any fuss.
