In San Jose, Graystone is Almaden at its most settled: a hillside grid of split-levels and ranch homes from the late 1960s and 70s tucked against the western foothills, wrapped around cul-de-sacs and organized, as much of Almaden is, around its schools. Its own well-regarded elementary sits in the middle, feeding up toward Bret Harte and Leland, and that boundary is the reason a lot of families land here and stay for a generation. Homes are mostly split-levels and ranch houses from the late 1960s and 1970s, with some newer construction mixed in. Yards here show decades of steady care, and on the western streets the hillsides rise right behind the back fences, and Graystone Elementary sits near the middle of the tract. The Los Alamitos Creek Trail is the everyday outdoor draw. It crosses Graystone Lane on its way between Almaden Lake and McKean Road, and a bridge at Pfeiffer Park links the path to Camden Avenue, so a walk along the creek can start a few blocks from home. A creekside park with a playground sits along the way, Singer Park adds a shady patch of lawn closer in, and the old mining trails of Almaden Quicksilver County Park are a quick drive south in New Almaden. Over on Camden Avenue, Country Inn Cafe is the breakfast table around here, known for Swedish pancakes and big omelets. Elements, along Almaden Expressway, mixes Vietnamese and French cooking, with grilled pork in rice crepes, green papaya salad and calamari on the menu. For coffee, BLVD Coffee is a short drive north on Meridian Avenue, roasting its own beans and offering patio seating along with tables inside. Errands take the car. Groceries and most shopping sit along the Almaden Expressway corridor, buses are few, there is no rail close by, and downtown is a long drive. The catch is the one the whole south valley lives with: you are a long way from downtown, buses are scarce, and every errand is a drive, with the nearest full shopping over on the Almaden Expressway corridor. For buyers who want a foothill address and a calm street over anything walkable, Graystone delivers exactly that, at a slightly gentler entry than the valley's marquee blocks.
