Willow Glen is the neighborhood that made central San Jose feel like a small town, and it has the origin story to match. The name comes from the willow-and-cattail marsh that once filled this low ground between the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, drained in 1860 to open the land to orchards. Willow Glen's flat grid off Lincoln holds Craftsman bungalows, a few Victorians, Spanish Eclectic cottages and the odd Eichler, most of it under a deep canopy. Many smaller originals have been replaced with bigger houses, so one block can pair an old cottage with a brand-new two-story. In December, a long-running tradition of Christmas tree lights fills whole streets. Bertucelli's La Villa is the Italian deli people cross town for, mostly for its fresh ravioli. Aqui, on Lincoln, pairs Cal-Mex plates with the blended margarita swirls it is known for. A few blocks off the main drag, Willow Street Pizza turns out thin wood-fired pies. For coffee, Chromatic roasts its own beans in a converted packing shed on the stretch of Lincoln between here and downtown. The Three Creeks Trail is the easy daily walk, following an old Western Pacific rail bed from Los Gatos Creek near Lonus Street east to the Guadalupe River. At its west end it meets the Los Gatos Creek Trail, which heads southwest toward Campbell. Frank Bramhall Park on Willow Street has tennis and basketball courts, a softball diamond and picnic tables. Blocks near Lincoln can handle most errands on foot, including the branch library on Minnesota Avenue and a Saturday morning farmers' market. VTA's 64A bus runs along Lincoln to Diridon Station, and Caltrain stops at Tamien just to the east. Interstate 280 closes off the north side and Highway 87 the east, and homes nearest them hear the traffic. Even the recent history is local lore here: the seven-year fight to save the 1922 Willow Glen Trestle over Los Gatos Creek ended with its 2020 demolition and a new pedestrian bridge. For buyers who want a walkable main street, character homes and canopy in one package, Willow Glen is the benchmark other San Jose neighborhoods get measured against.
