In San Jose, Wayne is a narrow strip of the north side dominated by the Interstate 680 and Oakland Road corridor, and that infrastructure is the defining fact of the neighborhood. It is a mix of residential blocks and Oakland Road corridor commercial and light-industrial uses on the flat valley floor, with the Berryessa BART station just off the eastern edge. The meal people make the trip for is on Oakland Road, where Chez Sovan has run a Cambodian kitchen for years. Its amok, a coconut-milk fish curry, is the dish to order, and lunch is served on weekdays only. Claw Shack, over on Berryessa Road, handles the seafood boil craving, and B Cafe, a few steps away, stays open late on weekends with coffee, fruit tea and boba. The older single-family houses in Wayne sit on side streets set back from Oakland Road, mixed in among commercial frontage and small industrial lots. Because the strip runs so far north to south, the feel changes from block to block, from quiet residential streets near Little Portugal and Luna Park to business-park edges where it meets the Golden Triangle. Green space mostly means a short trip. The Penitencia Creek Trail runs from Mabury Road and Jackson Avenue and follows a paved, mostly continuous route east toward Alum Rock Park, open to bikes and skaters. Townsend Park, a quick drive away, has tennis courts, playgrounds and a horseshoe pit. Groceries come from Sprouts on East Brokaw Road, and the San Jose Flea Market's long produce row fills in from Friday through Sunday. BART and VTA's Rapid 500 both run from the Berryessa station, and both freeways are close. Traffic and freeway noise are part of the day, and the corridor frontage stays utilitarian. But for a value-minded buyer whose priorities are freeway and transit access at a reasonable price, Wayne keeps you connected on the north side. Anyone seeking green space, a walkable node or a scenic street, though, will want to look at the more residential Berryessa neighborhoods nearby instead.
