Rainbow Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Cupertino Schools, Calabazas Creek, Westside Border

Rainbow is the far-western edge of San Jose, close enough to Cupertino that its biggest draw is often the schools: this pocket falls into the Cupertino Union and Fremont Union district areas that pull so many buyers toward this side of the valley. The neighborhood takes its name from Rainbow Drive and sits on flat ground near the Calabazas Creek corridor, with Calabazas Park just off the western edge for green space. Homes are single-family and mostly one story, on level lots along short streets with little through traffic. Garages and driveways face the street, and with no through route, the blocks stay quiet most of the day. Most people describe the area by the nearby park or by Cupertino rather than by name. Calabazas Park is the everyday green space, at Blaney Avenue, with a picnic area along Calabazas Creek and enough open grass for a weekend game of catch. The Saratoga Creek Trail is a short trip east, linking Bollinger and Prospect roads with footbridges and a loop through Murdock Park. The Calabazas Branch Library on South Blaney Avenue is close by too, with a seed library, 3D printers and group study rooms, and a few VTA bus routes stop out front. Food and coffee mostly mean Cupertino. Phở Hà Nội on South De Anza Boulevard serves a giant short rib pho in diner booths, and Ox 9 Lanzhou Handpulled Noodles, also on De Anza, is known for Gansu-style hand-pulled noodles and chili-dusted lamb chops. Bitter + Sweet on Town Center Lane is the espresso and pastry stop, pouring Sightglass alongside guest roasters. Everything else runs by car. Light rail isn't close, retail sits out on Lawrence Expressway and De Anza Boulevard rather than inside the tract, and a grocery run is always a drive, though the shopping along De Anza is only a few minutes away. The honest tradeoffs are the car-dependence and the retail that sits out on the Lawrence Expressway and toward Cupertino rather than in the neighborhood. For buyers chasing westside schools without a Cupertino price tag, Rainbow is a quiet, practical way to get close to that line.
