Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Office Towers, Big Box Retail, No Single Family

Metro Center is Foster City's engine room, and it makes no attempt to be charming about it. This is where the office towers are, where the big-box shopping is, and where a large share of the city's daytime population actually shows up. Visa's campus dominates the skyline, two twelve-story towers on Metro Center Boulevard finished out into a full campus in 2024. Around them sit the kind of buildings that keep Foster City's tax base healthy and its lunch spots busy from noon to one and dead by two. The retail is the other half of the story, and it is the half that the rest of the city uses. Costco on Metro Center Boulevard is the neighborhood's most reliable landmark, and the Safeway on East Hillsdale Boulevard is where a lot of Foster City does its actual grocery shopping. If you have lived here for a year, you have been to Metro Center, whether you meant to or not. You will not find single family homes here. Housing is apartments, aimed at people who want to be able to walk to work and to a warehouse-sized grocery store in the same trip. Leo J. Ryan Park and the lagoon sit just across the boundary, close enough that Metro Center employees eat lunch there in good weather. The honest read: this is a district, not a neighborhood. It has parking lots, not front yards. Weekend Costco traffic is a genuine consideration, and at 8pm on a Tuesday the place empties out. Some people want to live where the errands are. Metro Center is the only spot in Foster City that actually offers that.
