Bucknall is a settled West San Jose neighborhood that runs on two things suburban families tend to want: Moreland district schools and easy shopping. Its namesake road threads the grid, the neighborhood elementary sits inside it, and the open-air Westgate and El Paseo de Saratoga centers are right at the northwest corner for groceries, restaurants and errands. Bucknall homes are single-family, set along flat, comfortable streets that have been lived on for decades. The interior blocks stay quiet even with the shopping so close, and most of the traffic stays out on the avenues that frame the grid. Westgate Center, just off the northwest corner at Saratoga and Campbell avenues, is where the week's errands happen. It holds Target, Nordstrom Rack, Ross and TJ Maxx, and the newer T&T Supermarket brings Asian groceries, an in-store bakery and ready-to-eat meals. El Paseo de Saratoga, across the way at Saratoga Avenue and Quito Road, adds more shops. For food, Mylapore at Westgate turns out South Indian vegetarian plates. A short drive up Saratoga Avenue brings Zeni Ethiopian and, a little farther on, Moonwake Coffee Roasters, which roasts its beans on site and serves from a half-moon bar in a room full of plants. It is the nearest coffee with its own roaster. For a walk by the water, the Saratoga Creek Trail runs beside Lawrence Expressway between Bollinger and Prospect roads, crossing the creek on footbridges and looping through Murdock Park, a short drive away. The honest tradeoffs are the Saratoga Avenue arterial and its shopping traffic along the edge, and no rail within an easy walk, so this is car-first living. For buyers who want the Moreland school draw and a low-key West Side address with the shopping practically attached, Bucknall is a dependable, unshowy choice that quietly checks the boxes.
