Mayfair Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Mayfair Park, Chicano Heritage, Chavez Legacy

Mayfair is one of the most historically significant neighborhoods in East San Jose, the ground where Cesar Chavez began his life as a community organizer. Living in this barrio, long known by the older nickname Sal Si Puedes, or 'get out if you can,' Chavez was recruited into the Community Service Organization by Fred Ross in 1952 and mentored by the activist priest Father Donald McDonnell at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, work that set him on the path to founding the farmworker movement. That history is part of the streetscape. The church's McDonnell Hall is a National Historic Landmark, murals honor labor and civil-rights figures, and the Cesar Chavez Memorial Walkway links sites here to San Jose State and downtown. The Mexican Heritage Plaza on Alum Rock Avenue is the cultural anchor, with a theater, gardens and mosaic tributes to Carlos Santana, Linda Ronstadt and Los Tigres del Norte. Mayfair's homes are mostly older single-family houses along flat streets, with some newer townhomes on San Antonio Street. King Road marks the line with Little Portugal to the west, and I-680 wraps the east and south sides. Mayfair Park has a community center, a skatepark and community garden plots, while Parque de la Amistad, Zolezzi Park and the city-run Rancho del Pueblo golf course add more open space. Alum Rock Avenue handles most meals and errands. Window Cafe is a small coffee and tea counter, and Rosas Taqueria sits a block or so east. Heading west on the same avenue, Panaderia Mexico keeps its ovens going, and Popular Bakery and Adega carry the Portuguese side of the corridor. A short drive east, the Alum Rock Transit Center is where VTA's Orange Line begins. But few San Jose neighborhoods carry this depth of cultural meaning, and the park, the plaza and the heritage give it a real center. For buyers who value history and community over polish, Mayfair is a genuinely meaningful place to plant roots.
