Hamann Park is a residential pocket on the west side of San Jose, running up against the Bascom Avenue corridor near the Campbell border. Its practical advantage is transit: the VTA Green Line stations along Bascom and the Southwest Expressway are close, which gives this otherwise car-oriented area a genuine light-rail option, and Bascom itself carries plenty of neighborhood shopping. Marijane Hamann Park is the neighborhood's main green space. It has tennis courts, a softball field, soccer by permit, playgrounds and barbecue areas, and there is a city community center for classes and programs. Parking is street only, which matters less for the blocks within walking distance. Homes are flat single-family houses on a settled street plan. Nothing here is flashy, and once you leave the arterials the side streets are calm and purely residential, and Marijane Hamann Park is a walk from a good share of them. Hamilton station, on Hamilton Avenue near Highway 17 in Campbell, and Bascom station, on the Southwest Expressway, both run Green Line trains toward downtown San Jose one way and toward Campbell and Winchester the other. Across most of the West Side that trip starts with a drive, and here it can start with a walk. Food runs south into Campbell. The Pruneyard, on Bascom Avenue, is home to Orchard City Kitchen, a Michelin Bib Gourmand pick known for Korean fried chicken and a biscuit it calls the Triple B. Living Room Coffee Craft on South Winchester is the coffee stop, with seats gathered around a fireplace. Westfield Valley Fair and Santana Row, a few minutes north, cover the bigger shopping trips. But the transit access sets it apart from a lot of the West Side tracts, and it keeps you close to the Campbell and Willow Glen areas. For a buyer who wants a modestly priced west-side street with real light-rail access nearby, Hamann Park is a practical, low-profile option.
