In San Jose, Alamitos is the creekside seam where Almaden proper starts to loosen into the wider south valley, and the water is what defines it. The Los Alamitos Creek greenbelt runs right through the neighborhood, giving these blocks a shaded trail and a genuine outdoor spine, and Almaden Lake sits just off the northwest edge as an easy add-on for a longer walk or a lazy afternoon. Homes in Alamitos are mostly single-family houses from the 1960s and 70s, set along streets that bend to follow the water. Almaden Valley sits on one side and Blossom Valley on the other, and the streets blend into both without much of a border. The creek trail is the everyday walk. It runs from Almaden Lake south toward McKean Road, with a fitness course along one stretch. Almaden Lake Park is just past the northwest corner, so a longer loop can take in the water, the picnic lawns and the bocce courts on the Winfield Boulevard side. Almaden Plaza, a short drive away on Almaden Expressway, handles groceries and most errands. Spectra Coffee Roasters is the coffee stop there, a small cafe known for lattes flavored with orange blossom, rose or turmeric and waffles big enough to split, though the few seats fill quickly. Empire Armadillo moved into the former Armadillo Willy's building on Blossom Hill Road and smokes Texas brisket alongside house-brined pastrami. Elements, farther down the expressway, is the sit-down choice for Vietnamese and French fusion. Almaden Expressway runs along the eastern edge, and the blocks closest to it hear the traffic through the day. For rail, the Blue Line stops at Ohlone/Chynoweth next door in Erikson, and most other trips start in the driveway. The honest note is the Almaden Expressway, which runs the eastern edge and brings traffic and noise with it, and a housing stock that is of its era. For a creek greenbelt, a walkable trail and Almaden's schools without the full Almaden price, Alamitos is a smart, under-the-radar place to look.
