In San Jose, the Branham neighborhood is, more than anything, a transit address: two VTA light-rail stations, Branham and Capitol, sit right in it along the Highway 87 corridor, which is unusually good rail access for a residential pocket this far south. That is the thing to know here, because the well-known Branham High School and Branham Park that share the name actually sit a few miles west, in a different neighborhood entirely. Housing is flat, valley-floor single-family stock wrapped around the freeway and the tracks, with Willow Glen South and Parkview as neighbors. Away from the corridor the streets settle into ordinary residential blocks, and Almaden Expressway and Capitol Expressway handle most car trips. Branham Lane is the everyday strip. Paris Baguette, in a shopping center on the lane, is the easy coffee stop, with a long case of pastries to go with it. Farther west, Big E Cafe is a morning favorite for empanadas, cakes and a chicken cilantro sandwich, and a Safeway on the same road covers groceries. Morning Lobby on Almaden Expressway is the cafe people line up for, mostly for its avocado toast. For real open space, Martial Cottle Park is a short drive east along the lane. The county and state park keeps an old family farm as working land, with parts still planted, so a walk through it runs past rows of crops instead of ball fields. The Blue Line runs through both stations north toward downtown, so a commute can start on foot with no transfer. The blocks that back onto Highway 87 and the tracks hear steady noise from both, and the streets closest to the corridor feel shaped by the infrastructure next door, with the freeway always somewhere in the view. For a commuter who wants to step onto the train without a transfer and does not mind the freeway edge, Branham makes a real case. Just do not buy it expecting the school or the park. Those belong to the Kooser neighborhood next door.
