In San Jose, Penitencia takes its name from the creek that gives it its best feature: the Penitencia Creek corridor and its trail run through the neighborhood, and Penitencia Creek Park sits right inside it, a paved greenway that follows the water toward the foothills. That creek-and-trail spine is a real amenity, and it puts this east-Berryessa pocket a notch above the typical flatland tract for green space and walkability along the water. Homes in Penitencia are older detached single-family houses, on streets that back onto or lead to the creek greenway. The hills rise close on the east side, which gives the afternoons a green backdrop most flatland tracts don't get. Yards are a workable size, and the creek side of the neighborhood feels more open than the blocks near the main roads. Alum Rock Park is a quick drive up the canyon road, with miles of trails winding through the canyon past creekside picnic spots and steep ridgeline climbs. Between it and the creek trail, a run or bike ride here can stay off busy streets for a long stretch. For dinner, The Drying Shed on Toyon Avenue is a family-run steakhouse known for prime rib. Over on McKee Road, Antipasto's by DeRose sells house-made ravioli, deli meats and a deep beer selection. Along Berryessa Road near the flea market, Claw Shack is the seafood boil stop, and B Cafe beside it handles coffee and fruit tea on the way home. The San Jose Flea Market on Berryessa Road runs Friday through Sunday, and its long produce row works as a weekend farmers market, an easy place to stock up on fruit and vegetables for the week. VTA's Orange Line stops on Capitol Avenue near the creek, and the Berryessa BART station is a few minutes away to the west. The honest tradeoffs are that district seam, which means school-district and identity lines get mixed near the southern edge, and the general car-dependence of the area. But for a buyer who wants a creek trail and a park essentially at the doorstep, on the greener eastern edge of Berryessa, Penitencia offers more nature than most of the north side, with the foothills as a bonus backdrop.
