City Review
Key Words: Santa Cruz Eastside, Live Oak Coast, Pleasure Point Cafes

Pleasure Point is the east-side stretch of Santa Cruz, running along the north shore of Monterey Bay between the Twin Lakes beaches and the edge of Capitola. It belongs to the Live Oak area, and its identity is built around surf, bluffs and a short chain of coves. The area breaks into two neighborhoods that sit side by side. Pleasure Point is the surf core, where cottages, taquerias and wetsuit-draped fences cluster along the bluff path. Opal Cliffs holds the eastern edge, a quieter run of bluff-edge houses and jewel-named streets that feels closer to Capitola's village. Homes across the area are mostly small single-family houses, from older beach bungalows to 1950s blocks, with a growing number of newer modern builds among them. Lots are compact and the streets are narrow, so the feel is more cottage than subdivision. Outdoors, the draw is the coastline. The Hook and The Point are the best known surf breaks, and Corcoran Lagoon and Santa Mo's Dog Beach lie toward the Twin Lakes end. Moran Lake adds tide pools and, in the colder months, wintering monarchs, and Sunday mornings bring a farmers market with live bands to Live Oak. Food is a neighborhood habit. Cole's Bar-B-Q does barbecue and burgers, Zameen at the Point serves Mediterranean plates, and Dunlap's Donuts handles the morning sweet tooth. Rootstock Collective, an artisan gallery, shows work from local makers. Daily life stays close to home. Portola Drive and the avenues leading up from the water hold most shops and small grocers, and the Live Oak library branch is nearby. Highway 1 runs just inland, downtown Santa Cruz is a drive west, and Capitola's village sits just east, reachable by bike on quieter days. Crowds come with the territory. The same beaches and cafes that make the area lively also bring day-trippers, so summer weekends mean slow traffic and full lots. In exchange, a morning surf check and a walk to coffee are part of an ordinary day.
