Live Oak is an unincorporated suburban area on Monterey Bay, between the city of Santa Cruz to the west and Capitola to the east. It has no formal downtown, and the area shares its 95062 ZIP code with Pleasure Point and Opal Cliffs. The name comes from the evergreen oaks that dot the landscape. Poultry farming later shaped the neighborhood, with many ranches here in the 1920s and 1930s, and a number of older lots still reflect that pattern, with narrow strips running back from the street. Over the decades, infill produced a mixed stock of houses, condo complexes and trailer parks. Because Houseberry maps one Live Oak neighborhood, this page and the neighborhood page cover the same land. The view here is toward the shoreline side. Moran Lake County Park has a small lake with nature trails and picnic tables, and the Simpkins Family Swim Center on 17th Avenue is one of the county's public pools. Twin Lakes State Beach anchors the western end of the coast, and East Cliff Drive follows the shore for a view of the water. Food is local and casual. People talk about Beckmann's Old World Bakery, Peoples Coffee and Silver Spur, and the broader Pleasure Point dining scene begins just past the boundary. The Eastside farmers market meets on Sunday mornings. Moving around is mostly by car on Highway 1, with the beach streets as a slower alternative toward Santa Cruz Harbor and Capitola. The corridor along 17th Avenue holds schools and the fire station, and parks fill in the gaps between residential blocks. This is a working, lived-in place stretched between two better-known towns. Its appeal is practical, with the water close by, daily needs scattered but reachable, and a slower pace than the beach towns on either side. Small parks sit between residential blocks, and the coast road is the pleasant way to cover a short distance.
