City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Bay view hillside streets, Historic home character, Immediate access to Tilden Park

Kensington sits in the hills above Berkeley and El Cerrito, and the elevation shapes almost everything about living here. Streets wind along the hillside rather than following a grid, and many homes pick up sweeping views of the Bay, the Golden Gate, and San Francisco. It feels noticeably quieter than the cities below, even though you are only a few minutes from Berkeley’s commercial districts and BART. The housing stock gives the area much of its character. Many homes were built between the 1920s and 1950s, and you see a mix of Spanish Revival houses, traditional California homes, and smaller storybook-style cottages. Renovations over the years have modernized interiors, but the exterior character of the neighborhood remains intact. The hillside layout also means houses rarely sit directly behind each other, which creates a sense of privacy even on relatively modest lots. Outdoor access is one of Kensington’s biggest advantages. The neighborhood backs directly up to Tilden Regional Park, one of the largest and most popular park systems in the East Bay. Residents have quick access to miles of trails, the Steam Train, Lake Anza, the golf course, and expansive open hillsides. On clear evenings, many streets also get dramatic sunsets across the Bay. Kensington has a small local commercial strip along Arlington Avenue with a few restaurants, cafes, and a neighborhood market. It is not a full downtown, but it serves the day-to-day needs of the community. For larger shopping trips, most residents head down the hill to El Cerrito or Berkeley within a few minutes. Curb appeal trends very strong. Mature trees, distinctive architecture, and careful maintenance give many blocks a polished and cohesive feel. The hillside setting adds visual interest that you do not see in flatter neighborhoods nearby. Living in Kensington feels a bit removed from the pace of the surrounding cities while still being closely connected to them. It is a place where views, nature access, and architectural character define the experience more than retail or nightlife.
