City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Transit-oriented living, Iron Horse Trail access, Modern mixed-use district

Contra Costa Centre is a compact urban district built around the Pleasant Hill / Contra Costa Centre BART station. Unlike most of Contra Costa County, which is dominated by suburban housing tracts, this area was intentionally developed as a higher-density transit village. The result feels noticeably more urban than the surrounding cities of Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, and Concord. Most of the housing here consists of mid-rise apartment buildings and condominium complexes constructed over the last two decades. Streets are walkable, sidewalks are wide, and many buildings include ground-floor retail or shared courtyards. It is one of the few places in the East Bay where living without a car is genuinely realistic. Residents can walk to BART, restaurants, coffee shops, and everyday services within a few minutes. Daily life revolves around the station area. Office buildings, residential towers, and small plazas cluster around the BART entrance, creating steady foot traffic throughout the day. Restaurants and casual dining options line the nearby blocks, and lunchtime tends to be especially busy due to nearby office workers. The Iron Horse Regional Trail runs directly through the district as well, providing a major recreational and commuting route for cyclists and pedestrians. Despite the density, outdoor access is better than many urban districts. The Iron Horse Trail offers miles of paved path stretching north toward Concord and south toward Danville, and small plazas and landscaped courtyards are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Larger parks are a short drive away, including Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek. Curb appeal is modern and consistent. Buildings are newer, landscaping is maintained, and the area feels intentionally planned rather than organically developed. The architecture is contemporary apartment-style construction rather than traditional neighborhood housing, but the environment is clean and cohesive. Living in Contra Costa Centre is about convenience and transit access. It offers one of the most walkable, BART-centered lifestyles in Contra Costa County, with restaurants, trails, and downtown Walnut Creek just minutes away.
