Aptos is an unincorporated coastal community in mid-county Santa Cruz, set between Capitola and Watsonville with Highway 1 as its spine. The land climbs from cliffside beaches on Monterey Bay up into redwood canyons, so surf, a college campus and a state forest all sit within a few miles of each other. Houseberry covers three Aptos neighborhoods, and they feel distinct from one another. Cabrillo is the college and shopping hub along Soquel Drive, with Cabrillo College, a big supermarket and the Saturday farmers market. Aptos Village is the older center, where wine rooms and cafes face open ballfields. Vienna Woods is the forested edge, close to the road into Nisene Marks. Houses here vary widely in age and style, from older cottages to newer builds, and the character shifts as the ground rises from the beaches toward the redwoods. Many streets are wooded, and the larger lots tend to sit upslope. Outdoors, the town is lucky. Beaches at Seacliff, Rio Del Mar and Sea Scape line the water, Seascape Golf Club has its own course, and a state forest of regrown redwoods, Nisene Marks, holds roughly 30 miles of trails. The Santa Cruz Blues Festival turns Aptos Village Park into a concert ground each Memorial Day weekend. Food leans local and seasonal. Persephone serves fine dining built around Santa Cruz County produce and seafood, Companion Bakeshop turns out organic sourdough and pastries, and Cat & Cloud Coffee in the village has an airy, high-ceilinged room. Over in Rio del Mar, Bittersweet Bistro is the upscale dinner choice. Day to day, almost everything is a drive. Highway 1 is the one main freeway through town, so when it slows the whole area slows with it, and the beaches, trailheads and shops are spread along Soquel Drive and the frontage roads rather than one walkable core. This is a coast town that kept its redwoods, and most days you can see both.
